TLE DESK: Former US President Donald Trump has described a proposed 45-day ceasefire in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel as a “very significant step”, while cautioning that it falls short of what is ultimately required to end hostilities.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump confirmed that Washington has reviewed the proposal, which is currently under discussion through diplomatic intermediaries. He acknowledged the importance of the initiative, noting that it represents progress in efforts to de-escalate tensions, but emphasised that it does not yet meet the threshold for a comprehensive resolution.
“It’s a significant proposal, it’s a significant step. It’s not good enough, but it’s a very significant step,” Trump said, signalling cautious optimism while maintaining a firm stance on the need for a more conclusive agreement.
The reported ceasefire plan, which would temporarily halt fighting for 45 days, is being negotiated amid intensifying international concern over the prolonged conflict and its broader regional implications.
However, Tehran has firmly rejected the proposal. According to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, Iranian authorities insist that any agreement must ensure a permanent end to the war rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.
Officials reiterated their position that a short-term truce would not adequately address the underlying issues driving the conflict.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes, with mediators working to bridge the gap between the parties. Analysts suggest that while the ceasefire proposal may not immediately succeed, it could serve as a foundation for more substantive negotiations in the coming days.
The situation remains fluid, with the international community closely monitoring developments and urging restraint on all sides to prevent further escalation.
