Austria, Algeria share six-goal thriller to reach World Cup knockout stage
TLE Desk: Austria and Algeria booked their places in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing one of the tournament’s most dramatic matches, battling to a thrilling 3-3 draw in Kansas City on Saturday.
The result secured qualification for both sides while ending Iran’s World Cup campaign heartbreakingly, as Team Melli had needed either Austria or Algeria to lose to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
In a match that ebbed and flowed, Austria appeared to be heading out of the tournament when Algeria took a 3-2 lead deep into stoppage time through Riyad Mahrez’s second goal of the night. However, Sasa Kalajdzic headed home from the final attack of the game to rescue Austria and send both teams into the Round of 32.
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick described the encounter as one of the most extraordinary matches of his coaching career.
“I’ve been a coach for about 40 years. I don’t remember a game with such a dramatic course and such an unexpected trajectory,” Rangnick said after the match.
Austria finished second in Group J behind defending champions Argentina and will now face European champions Spain in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Algeria, meanwhile, secured third place in the group but also progressed to the knockout stage under the expanded 48-team tournament format. Les Fennecs will play Switzerland in Vancouver.
“It is a feeling of being extremely happy,” Mahrez said. “Our objective was to go beyond the first round, and we’ve achieved that.”
Austria opened the scoring through veteran striker Marko Arnautovic, who netted his record-extending 49th international goal after breaking through the Algerian defence.
Algeria equalised just before half-time when Rafik Belghali beat goalkeeper Alexander Schlager with a composed finish.
The second half maintained the same frantic pace. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead after finishing Konrad Laimer’s cross-field pass, only for Mahrez to level again minutes later following excellent work by Houssem Aouar.
With the score locked at 2-2 entering stoppage time, both teams appeared content with a draw that would send them through. Instead, Mahrez fired Algeria ahead in added time, seemingly condemning Austria to elimination.
Moments later, Kalajdzic rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser, ensuring both sides progressed and leaving Iran eliminated.
The match also carried historical significance. Algeria had entered the contest seeking redemption against Austria more than four decades after the controversial “Disgrace of Gijón” at the 1982 World Cup, when Austria and West Germany played out a result that eliminated the North African side.
With both teams knowing before kick-off that a draw would be enough to qualify, concerns had been raised over a possible repeat of that infamous episode. Instead, the 69,045 spectators at Arrowhead Stadium witnessed one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic praised his players after the dramatic qualification.
“The match was a little crazy. It went beyond everyone’s endurance,” he said. “Now we celebrate qualification, recover, and prepare for the next round.”
