At least 28 killed as bus plunges into ravine in Ethiopia
TLE DESK: At least 28 people were killed and many others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Ethiopia on Monday, local authorities said.
The accident occurred when a bus travelling from Dessie in the Amhara region to the capital Addis Ababa veered off the road and fell into a ravine about 100 metres (330 feet) deep.
Regional authorities said 28 people died in the crash, while many others suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe. The exact number of passengers on board has not been disclosed.
Survivors were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Images shared by local authorities showed the wreckage of the bus lying on a hillside, with the vehicle almost completely destroyed by the impact.
Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Ethiopia, where poor road conditions, challenging terrain and vehicle safety issues often contribute to deadly crashes.
The tragedy follows several major road accidents in the country in recent years. In December 2024, more than 70 people were killed when a vehicle carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in southern Ethiopia, marking the country’s deadliest road accident in more than two decades.
Earlier that same year, at least 28 people died and 19 others were seriously injured after a bus swerved into a river in the southern Wolaita region.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims from Monday’s crash.
