Middle East war intensifies as strikes widen and tensions escalate across region

April 7, 2026 3 Min Read

TLE DESK: — The conflict in the Middle East deepened on Tuesday, with fresh exchanges of fire between Israel and Iran, alongside growing regional spillover and increasingly stark warnings from global leaders.
Airstrikes and retaliation
Explosions were reported in Tehran and the nearby city of Karaj, according to Iranian media outlets, as Israel confirmed it had launched a new “wave” of airstrikes. In response, Iranian missiles were fired towards Israeli territory, triggering the activation of Israel’s air defence systems.
Missiles intercepted in Saudi Arabia
The conflict’s impact extended to Saudi Arabia, where air defence systems intercepted and destroyed seven ballistic missiles aimed at the eastern region. Authorities said debris fell near key power facilities, raising concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.
Violence spreads to Iraqi Kurdistan
In northern Iraq, a drone believed to have originated from Iran struck a residential home in the autonomous Kurdistan region, killing two civilians. Separate explosions were also reported near Erbil airport, which hosts personnel from the US-led coalition. Security sources indicated that missiles targeting the US consulate in Erbil had been intercepted earlier.
Trump issues stark warning to Iran
US President Donald Trump intensified rhetoric against Tehran, warning that the country’s infrastructure could be devastated within hours if it failed to comply with demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He suggested that key facilities, including power plants and bridges, could be destroyed in a rapid military operation.
Iranian officials dismissed the remarks, criticising what they described as “arrogant rhetoric” and asserting that such threats would not alter their course of action.
Details emerge of US rescue mission
American officials disclosed new details of a complex operation to rescue two US airmen shot down over Iran. The mission reportedly involved more than 170 aircraft and hundreds of personnel, underlining the scale of US military engagement in the conflict.
Ceasefire efforts collapse
Attempts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed, with both Washington and Tehran rejecting a proposal put forward by mediating nations. While Trump described the initiative as a “significant step”, he maintained it did not go far enough. Iranian authorities reiterated their demand for a permanent end to hostilities rather than a temporary pause.
Warnings over humanitarian and nuclear risks
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned against threats to civilian infrastructure, stressing that such actions could violate international law.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed grave concern over strikes near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant. Director General Rafael Grossi said the attacks posed a serious risk to nuclear safety, noting one strike occurred just 75 metres from the facility.
Strategic sites targeted
Israel said it had struck three airports in Tehran, targeting aircraft linked to Iranian military forces. It also reported attacks on major petrochemical facilities, including infrastructure associated with the South Pars gas field, one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operations were aimed at weakening the financial base of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Senior Iranian commander killed
Iran confirmed that an Israeli strike killed a senior intelligence figure of the Revolutionary Guards, Major General Majid Khademi. In response, the Guards warned of a “major retaliatory strike”, heightening fears of further escalation.
Growing fears of wider war
With military exchanges intensifying, diplomatic efforts faltering, and regional involvement expanding, concerns are mounting that the conflict could spiral into a broader war. International observers continue to call for urgent de-escalation to prevent further destabilisation across the Middle Ea
