Amazon could be biggest fin winner in Anthropic’s potential IPO
Amazon could emerge as the biggest financial beneficiary of Anthropic’s potential initial public offering (IPO), with its investment in the artificial intelligence company and long-term cloud computing agreements potentially delivering substantial returns, according to a report by TechCrunch.
The report, published on 27 October, highlights how major technology companies may benefit more from Anthropic’s public listing than some of the venture capital firms that backed the AI developer in its early stages.
Anthropic’s reported private valuation of $965 billion means even relatively small equity stakes could be worth billions of dollars. However, the company’s scale also means that several prominent venture capital investors, including Menlo Ventures, Sequoia, Sound Ventures and Spark Capital, hold less than 5% individually, according to the report.
Amazon’s investment structure
Amazon began backing Anthropic in 2023 with a commitment to invest up to $4 billion. It subsequently expanded its financial involvement through convertible notes and preferred stock.
According to Anthropic’s registration statement, Amazon held convertible notes with $6.2 billion in outstanding principal as of 30 June 2026. Amazon’s own filings valued those holdings at $97.9 billion at the same date, reflecting the reported increase in their value as Anthropic’s valuation rose through successive funding rounds.
The notes could convert into as many as 1.84 billion shares, subject to a cap limiting Amazon to 12% of Anthropic’s partially diluted share count unless Amazon waives the restriction. The final number of shares issued would depend on the terms and mechanics of the conversion.
Amazon also invested $10 billion in non-voting preferred stock during the second quarter of 2026, according to its quarterly report. TechCrunch estimates that Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic reached approximately $18 billion, including its earlier investments through convertible notes.
Cloud computing adds another source of value
Amazon’s potential gains extend beyond its equity and debt-related holdings. Anthropic has committed to spending at least $110 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade, providing Amazon with a substantial long-term commercial relationship with the AI company.
Google is also positioned to benefit from Anthropic’s growth. TechCrunch cited estimates that Google’s current stake could be around 5.6%, following further funding rounds that diluted earlier holdings. Google has also secured at least $114 billion in cloud computing commitments from Anthropic through 2033, according to the report.
These arrangements illustrate how investment and infrastructure partnerships are becoming increasingly interconnected in the AI industry. Technology companies can benefit not only from the rising value of AI developers but also from the computing capacity those developers require to train and operate their models.
Financial gains come with strategic tensions
The relationships also create potential conflicts of interest. Amazon and Google operate cloud computing businesses while developing their own AI technologies, placing them in commercial competition with companies such as Anthropic.
Anthropic’s registration statement reportedly warns that cloud providers may have interests that do not always align with its own. The extent to which these competing relationships affect future business decisions remains uncertain.
For venture capital investors, an IPO could still generate significant returns. Yet the structure of Anthropic’s financing highlights how strategic corporate investors can accumulate substantial financial exposure while also securing long-term commercial relationships.
The potential listing therefore represents more than a liquidity event for early investors. It also underscores the growing influence of major technology companies in financing, hosting and competing within the artificial intelligence sector.
