Brazil cruise past Haiti to reach World Cup knockout stage

TLE Desk: Matheus Cunha scored twice as Brazil secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Haiti on Friday, becoming the first team from Group C to book a place in the World Cup knockout stage.

The Manchester United forward opened the scoring after converting a rebound from Vinícius Júnior’s saved effort before adding a superb second goal later in the first half. Vinícius then capped an impressive display by finding the net himself before the break.

The five-time world champions dominated throughout at Lincoln Financial Field, with Haiti unable to cope with Brazil’s attacking quality.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed after the match that Neymar is expected to return from injury for the team’s final group match against Scotland next week.

The victory lifted Brazil level with Morocco at the top of Group C and ensured Haiti, appearing at their first World Cup since 1974, became the first team eliminated from the expanded 48-nation tournament.

Cunha, who was only used as a substitute in Brazil’s opening 1-1 draw with Morocco, justified his inclusion in the starting line-up with an influential performance in front of more than 68,000 spectators.

Vinícius, who also scored in the opener, praised the team’s improved display after a disappointing start to the tournament.

Brazil will face Scotland in their final group fixture on Wednesday, while Haiti’s World Cup campaign will end after their last group-stage match.
