Freeman header helps US beat Australia and reach knockout stage
TLE Desk: Alex Freeman, the 21-year-old son of former NFL star Antonio Freeman, scored as the United States secured a 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday to strengthen their position in the World Cup.
Freeman headed home shortly before half-time after a deflected effort from Sergiño Dest looped into the air inside the penalty area. A VAR review briefly delayed celebrations before the goal was confirmed.
The young defender’s third international goal doubled the Americans’ lead and helped seal a comfortable win at Lumen Field.
US coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Freeman’s rapid development, describing him as “an amazing player” who continues to impress on the biggest stage.
Freeman, who joined Spanish club Villarreal earlier this year after leaving Orlando City, has emerged as one of the standout young players in the American squad. He also registered an assist in the USA’s opening victory over Paraguay.
The son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman said the goal represented a special family moment and highlighted the influence his father has had on his career.
The United States controlled much of the match against Australia and moved closer to securing top spot in their group as they advanced towards the knockout rounds.
