Pennsylvania shooting leaves 8 victims, suspected gunman dead
Two children and a pregnant woman among those killed in Erie; police continue investigating motive and circumstances
Eight people, including a pregnant woman and two children, were killed in a shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, before the suspected gunman was also found dead, bringing the total death toll to nine, authorities said on Saturday.
The 45-year-old man was related to seven of the victims, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said at a news conference. The victims included a five-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the killings.
According to reporting by the Associated Press and Reuters, the incident unfolded shortly before 5pm local time on Friday, 9 October. Investigators reviewing video and audio evidence found indications of gunfire inside the house before two distressed women arrived and knocked on the door. The gunman came outside and shot the women as they approached him, police said.
Officers responding to an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot-detection system, found the two women dead outside the residence. Police later entered the property and discovered the remaining victims and the suspected shooter. Authorities said all nine deaths occurred before officers arrived.
Police have declined to disclose a motive as the investigation continues. Investigators plan to speak with relatives and examine the mobile phones of the women killed outside the house for evidence that could help establish what happened before the shooting.
Lorah said the circumstances were deeply disturbing and acknowledged the devastating effect on the victims’ families and the wider community. District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz urged the public to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information while investigators work to establish the facts.
Authorities also clarified that sounds heard during the police response that might have been mistaken for additional gunfire came from flashbang devices used by tactical officers. The city said no further shots were fired after officers arrived.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said his administration had offered its full support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and the local community. Devlin expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said the community was grieving with them.
Erie, a city in northwestern Pennsylvania, lies approximately 190 kilometres north of Pittsburgh. The killings have shocked the community, with the police chief describing the scale of the loss as unprecedented in his more than 28 years of experience.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not announced a motive or publicly identified the victims in the reports cited.
