Trump calls Iran ceasefire proposal a ‘significant step’, but says more needed

TLE DESK: Former US President Donald Trump has described a proposed 45-day ceasefire in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel as a “very significant step”, while cautioning that it falls short of what is ultimately required to end hostilities.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump confirmed that Washington has reviewed the proposal, which is currently under discussion through diplomatic intermediaries. He acknowledged the importance of the initiative, noting that it represents progress in efforts to de-escalate tensions, but emphasised that it does not yet meet the threshold for a comprehensive resolution.
“It’s a significant proposal, it’s a significant step. It’s not good enough, but it’s a very significant step,” Trump said, signalling cautious optimism while maintaining a firm stance on the need for a more conclusive agreement.
