Netherlands face Sweden test as World Cup group stage reaches halfway mark

June 20, 2026 2 Min Read

TLE DESK: The expanded 2026 World Cup reaches the halfway point of its group-stage schedule on Saturday, with the Netherlands facing a crucial clash against Sweden and Germany taking on Ivory Coast in two of the day’s standout fixtures.

A total of 36 matches will have been played by the end of Saturday, with another 36 remaining before the 32-team knockout phase begins on June 28.

The Netherlands, still seeking a first World Cup title despite their long-standing reputation as one of football’s strongest nations, head into their Group F encounter under pressure after surrendering two leads in a 2-2 draw with Japan in their opening match.

Coach Ronald Koeman has faced criticism over his side’s performance, while Sweden arrive full of confidence following an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia.

“It’s about how we perform and the mentality we have,” Sweden coach Graham Potter said. “We know we are improving and we have to play better against a stronger opponent.”

In Group E, Germany will look to build on their impressive 7-1 victory over Curaçao when they meet Ivory Coast in Toronto. The Ivorians also opened their campaign with a win, edging Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a late goal.

Elsewhere, Ecuador face what could be a must-win match against Curaçao after suffering a last-gasp defeat in their opening game. Another setback would leave the South Americans facing a difficult task ahead of their final group match against Germany.

Japan, meanwhile, will seek to maintain momentum after earning a creditable draw against the Netherlands. They face Tunisia, who have appointed Hervé Renard as head coach following their heavy defeat to Sweden.

The three host nations continue to enjoy a strong tournament. The United States have already secured a place in the knockout stage after consecutive victories, while Canada strengthened their qualification hopes with a 6-0 rout of Qatar.

Mexico have become the first team to secure top spot in their group after a 1-0 victory over South Korea sealed the Group A title.

Saturday’s fixtures could prove decisive in shaping several groups as the race for places in the last 32 intensifies across North America.
