Middle East tensions persist as Iran, Yemen and Gaza face renewed pressure
TLE Desk: At least five Palestinians, including four women, were killed as a result of an Israeli attack on a residential building in Gaza City.
The attack in Gaza came at a time when, despite the ceasefire, questions remain over the protection of civilians. The reported civilian deaths are raising concerns about the sustainability of the ceasefire and the monitoring of its implementation.
Besides Gaza, tensions between Iran and the US and a possible military operation against the Houthis in Yemen have raised concerns about further confrontation in the Middle East. In Yemen, Saudi-backed forces are also preparing for a possible military operation against the Houthis. According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia is considering various options for a limited or broad military operation to retake areas under Houthi control in the Bab al-Mandeb region. The final timing and scope of the operation were not yet clear.
Despite diplomatic contacts between Iran and the United States, tensions persisted. Reuters reported on October 1 that Iranian officials were considering the possibility of a broader response in case of further major attacks by the United States. However, this was not an announcement of a final military action but rather measures under consideration to deal with a possible situation.
The ongoing tensions in the region also had an impact on Gulf financial markets. According to the report, during the week Abu Dhabi’s stock index fell by 2.2% while Dubai’s index fell by 1.3%, amid the ongoing deadlock between the United States and Iran and regional uncertainty.
In the coming week in the Middle East, the focus will be on diplomatic contacts between Iran and the United States, possible military action in Yemen, and the ceasefire situation in Gaza.
