Shamorita joins RMRN CT to lead POP
Bangladeshi international relations researcher and media professional to support regional collaboration and cross-border media diplomacy.
The Regional Media Research Network (RMRN) has welcomed Shamorita Barua of Bangladesh to its Core Team (CT), where she will lead Partnerships, Outreach and Programmes (POP) and support the network’s efforts to strengthen regional media dialogue, professional collaboration, and cross-border engagement.
RMRN connects media professionals, journalists and researchers across South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Its work focuses on media monitoring, research, verification, comparative analysis of media narratives and regional dialogue through regular Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).
In this role, Shamorita will help build relationships with media organisations, research institutions, journalists, and potential partners across the region. She will also support outreach initiatives, programme coordination, collaborative projects and activities designed to expand RMRN’s regional network.
Her responsibilities will include identifying opportunities for institutional collaboration, supporting professional exchanges, facilitating engagement with prospective partners and helping develop initiatives that translate RMRN’s objectives into practical programmes.
Shamorita is a graduate in International Relations from Jahangirnagar University and is pursuing a Master of Social Science in International Relations at the same institution. Her ongoing master’s thesis examines the human rights struggle in Arakan State, Myanmar, a subject relevant to regional affairs, human rights and cross-border understanding.
She previously worked as a news scriptwriter at Durbin News in Dhaka from 2021 to 2023, developing research-based scripts for news content. She also worked as a content creator and campus ambassador with 10 Minute School, Digital Bee Bangla and GK Network between 2020 and 2022, contributing to educational content and youth outreach campaigns.
Her leadership experience includes serving as Vice-President and a founding member of the International Relations Research Club at Jahangirnagar University from 2024 to August 2026. In that capacity, she helped establish the organisation, organise seminars and support junior members in academic writing and international relations research.
Shamorita has also served as Secretary of Academics at the JU Model United Nations Association during 2023–2024, coordinating academic workshops and organisational activities for Model United Nations conferences. Since July 2026, she has been working as a Local Coordinator at Students For Liberty Academy, Bangladesh, supporting academic events, discussions, outreach campaigns and collaboration with regional teams.
Her training includes the British Council LEAD Bangladesh leadership and youth empowerment programme, the Democratic Theory and Practice summer programme at Jahangirnagar University, and a research methodology course at the Liberation War Museum.
Her published Bangla opinion pieces have addressed subjects including climate justice, human rights, regional geopolitics, environmental awareness and transboundary river issues. These interests reflect an engagement with the political, social and environmental factors that influence regional cooperation.
Shamorita’s appointment comes as RMRN develops its working structure across three regional blocks: South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The network aims to bring together perspectives from different countries and examine how important regional and international developments are reported, interpreted and understood.
Through her responsibilities in partnerships, outreach and programmes, Shamorita will contribute to building connections beyond the existing membership and identifying opportunities for collaborative activities with relevant organisations and professionals.
Her background in international relations, research, news writing, youth engagement and organisational leadership offers a combination of academic and practical experience relevant to this work.
RMRN’s approach centres on monitoring major media stories, researching their background, comparing coverage across countries and discussing findings collectively. The objective is to encourage evidence-based discussion, responsible media practices and a better understanding of regional perspectives.
As the network expands, partnerships and professional exchanges will be important to ensuring that its activities lead to meaningful dialogue and practical collaboration rather than remaining limited to online discussions.
Shamorita’s role will therefore focus on helping RMRN strengthen its institutional connections, broaden participation and develop programmes that support its long-term regional objectives.
About RMRN: The Regional Media Research Network is a regional platform for media research, media monitoring, cross-border dialogue, regional media diplomacy and professional collaboration across South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
