Iran escalates attacks after Trump’s warning over Strait of Hormuz

April 6, 2026 2 Min Read

TBT DESK: launched fresh missile and drone attacks across the Middle East on Monday, while warning of “devastating” retaliation following strong remarks by US President Donald Trump demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.Israel, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates reported a barrage of early morning strikes, heightening tensions across the region. The escalation came as Iran intensified its rhetoric against Washington.

Tehran’s central military command warned of “much more devastating” retaliation if civilian targets are attacked by its adversaries. The warning followed Trump’s threat to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure unless Tehran agrees to reopen the strategic Gulf shipping route. Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, triggering strong reactions from Washington.

In a social media post, Trump set a deadline for Iran to comply, stating “Tuesday, 8:00 PM” (0000 GMT Wednesday), while also hinting at possible airstrikes on key infrastructure, including power plants and bridges. The conflict, which began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Tehran, has since spread across the Middle East, significantly impacting global energy markets. Oil prices surged in early Asian trading, with West Texas Intermediate rising 1.86 percent to $113.62 per barrel, while Brent crude crossed $110.Despite Trump’s claim that Iran is “close” to reaching a deal, analysts remain skeptical. Security expert Danny Citrinowicz said the chances of a negotiated settlement under current conditions are “close to nonexistent.”

Iran’s leadership strongly condemned the US stance. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that the region could face widespread destruction if tensions continue to escalate, accusing Washington of acting under Israeli influence.Russia also criticized the US approach, urging a shift away from ultimatums and a return to diplomatic negotiations, according to statements following a call between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart.

Meanwhile, daily life in Tehran appeared relatively calm, with residents seen engaging in outdoor activities despite rising geopolitical tensions.
