Russian ballistic missile attack destroys kindergarten in Kyiv
At least six missiles targeted the Ukrainian capital overnight, damaging apartment blocks and triggering fires as President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of further attacks on energy facilities and civilian infrastructure.
A Russian ballistic missile barrage struck Kyiv overnight on 6–7 November, injuring three people, including a child, and destroying a two-storey building on the grounds of a kindergarten. The attack also damaged several residential buildings and sparked fires in the Ukrainian capital, according to city authorities and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Air Force warned of at least six ballistic missiles heading towards Kyiv shortly before 11 pm local time on Friday. The warning triggered air raid alerts across the capital and several other regions. Explosions were reported as Russian forces targeted infrastructure in the city.
The State Emergency Service, known by its Ukrainian abbreviation DSNS, reported extensive damage in the Solomianskyi district. A missile strike destroyed a two-storey structure within a kindergarten’s grounds, while several five-storey apartment buildings sustained damage. At one residential block, part of the ground-floor façade collapsed. Blast waves also shattered windows at three other locations, injuring one person.
Two further people were injured at separate locations, including a child, bringing the reported total to three. A parked truck and a non-residential building caught fire, but emergency crews extinguished the blazes. Authorities continued assessing the damage after the attack.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko had earlier reported that missile debris struck a five-storey residential building and urged residents to remain in shelters while the attack was underway. The updated casualty figures and damage assessment were subsequently provided by emergency officials.
The overnight barrage came hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian intelligence had detected preparations for further Russian strikes against the country’s energy facilities, bridges over the Dnipro River and civilian infrastructure.
In his evening address, Zelensky warned that the anticipated targets included the energy sector and transport links. He called on Ukraine’s Western partners to accelerate deliveries of Patriot air-defence interceptor missiles, arguing that delays in supplying defensive equipment could have immediate consequences.
“Every single day in terms of supplies is extremely important,” he said, urging allies not to postpone deliveries.
The warning places the Kyiv attack within a wider concern over the vulnerability of Ukraine’s essential infrastructure as the country enters another winter under sustained Russian military pressure. Energy facilities and transport networks are particularly important to civilian services, economic activity and the movement of emergency supplies.
The destruction of a building on kindergarten grounds illustrates the risks faced by civilian facilities during attacks on urban areas. Although the supplied reports do not establish whether the kindergarten was operating at the time of the strike, the damage adds to the disruption experienced by communities whose schools, homes and public services have repeatedly been affected by the war.
Damage to apartment buildings also creates immediate concerns for residents, including the loss of safe accommodation, broken windows and potential structural hazards. Fires involving vehicles and non-residential buildings place additional demands on emergency responders already operating in a high-risk environment.
The reported casualties remain limited to three people in the updated Kyiv assessment. The available information does not establish the full financial cost of the damage or whether the targeted infrastructure sustained operational disruption.
For Ukraine, the immediate priorities are emergency response, damage assessment and the protection of civilians against further attacks. The broader challenge remains the defence of energy and transport infrastructure while maintaining essential public services during the continuing war.
The latest strike also reinforces the importance of timely air-defence supplies and effective civilian warning systems. As Zelensky’s remarks indicate, Ukrainian authorities are concerned not only with the consequences of individual attacks but also with preparations for further strikes against infrastructure on which the country’s population and economy depend.
